Federal Service Student Ambassadors
Over the next five years, around one-third of the permanent full-time workforce will be eligible to retire from our federal government. Additionally, the government will need to hire 173,000 people in mission-critical areas alone by the end of 2009.
The Partnership for Public Service has learned from our research that students in college are generally interested in working for the federal government but lack the knowledge to actually find and apply for those jobs and internships. We also learned that students look to their peers for advice and assistance throughout the job-search process. As such, the Federal Service Ambassadors program is designed to increase interest in federal service on college campuses through developing a corps of passionate student advocates who will actively promote public service following their completion of a federal summer internship.
Ambassadors will return to campus following their internship in a federal agency ready to lead major outreach efforts on their campus. In addition to an initial training over the summer, Ambassadors will receive support from Partnership staff and university personnel as well as a competitive stipend for the duration of their service. Ambassadors will work to raise awareness of benefits of federal service through planning events, meeting with key faculty and staff members, and spreading the word about public service opportunities to others on campus. Further, they will stay connected to fellow Ambassadors to share resources, best practices and recommendations.
